Is your child learning English while also trying to understand school assignments, reading passages, vocabulary, and writing expectations?
The REAL Impact English Language Literacy Support Program provides personalized academic support for students who speak or use a language other than English at home.
The program helps students strengthen the English reading, writing, vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills they need to participate more confidently in school.
IMPORTANT – This is an academic literacy support program. It is not a replacement for English learner services, special education services, speech-language services, or other services provided by a student’s school.

Who Is This Program For?
This program may be a good fit for students who:
- Speak or understand another language at home
- Are learning English as an additional language
- Have difficulty understanding reading assignments written in English
- Need help expressing their ideas in complete English sentences
- Understand a lesson but have difficulty explaining their answers
- Need additional support with English vocabulary
- Have difficulty writing paragraphs or responding to questions
- Need more confidence when reading, writing, or speaking in English
- Need help understanding classroom directions or academic language
Students do not have to be beginning English speakers. Support is available for students at different English-language and academic levels.
What Will Students Learn?
Instruction may include:
Reading Comprehension
Students learn how to:
- Identify the main idea and important details
- Understand characters, events, and information
- Use clues from a passage to determine meaning
- Answer questions using evidence from the text
- Summarize what they have read
- Understand grade-appropriate reading passages
English Vocabulary
Students receive support with:
- Everyday English words
- School and classroom vocabulary
- Academic words used in reading, science, social studies, and mathematics
- Multiple-meaning words
- Word parts, prefixes, suffixes, and context clues
- Correct word usage in speaking and writing
Writing Development
Students practice how to:
- Write complete English sentences
- Organize ideas in the correct order
- Develop clear paragraphs
- Use capitalization, punctuation, and grammar
- Respond to reading questions in writing
- Explain answers with details and evidence
- Revise writing so it is easier to understand
Speaking and Listening
When appropriate, students may also practice:
- Explaining ideas aloud
- Asking and answering questions
- Following academic directions
- Using complete sentences during discussions
- Pronouncing unfamiliar academic words
- Building confidence when communicating in English
A Personalized Learning Plan
Each student begins with a brief literacy and language review. The review helps identify the student’s strengths and the areas in which additional support is needed.
A personalized learning plan may focus on:
- Reading accuracy
- Reading comprehension
- English vocabulary
- Sentence development
- Grammar and language use
- Paragraph writing
- Written responses
- Academic communication
- School assignments and assessments
Lessons are adjusted according to the student’s age, grade, current English-language development, and academic needs.
How Instruction Is Provided
The program is available virtually for students in Grades 3–12.
Students may receive:
- Individual literacy support
- Small-group instruction when students have similar needs
- Guided reading and vocabulary practice
- Step-by-step writing instruction
- Visual examples and modeled responses
- Repeated practice with new language skills
- Activities connected to school reading and writing expectations
- Progress updates for parents
Instruction is designed to be encouraging, respectful, and easy to understand.
Respect for the Student’s Home Language
A child’s home language is an important strength.
Students will not be discouraged from speaking, reading, or communicating in their home language. Instead, instruction will help them connect what they already know with the English-language skills they need for success in school.
Parents may also continue reading, discussing ideas, and sharing stories with their children in the language used most comfortably at home.
Parent Participation
Parents do not have to speak English fluently for their child to participate.
Parents may receive:
- A simple explanation of their child’s learning goals
- Regular progress updates
- Suggestions for supporting reading and language development at home
- Help understanding school literacy expectations
- Opportunities to share information about their child’s language background, interests, and educational needs
When possible, written communication may be translated into the parent’s preferred language.

- Complete reading and writing assignments more independently
- Strengthen the literacy skills required for classroom success

Important Program Information
This is an academic literacy support program. It is not a replacement for English learner services, special education services, speech-language services, or other services provided by a student’s school.
REAL Impact Group may communicate with the parent about the student’s academic needs and progress. Communication with a school or teacher will occur only with the parent’s permission.
